Additional deliverables include conference abstracts, white papers, articles, case studies, user manuals, presentations, and scientific reports. Tess has a B.A. in Psychology from Bethel University, St. Paul, and is dedicated to refining her craft.
Outside of work, Tess volunteers with the American Medical Writers Association, where she currently serves as the president of the North Central chapter. Tess enjoys playing Broadway hits on the piano, cooking, hiking, jogging, and, with her husband Nick, packing her three kids into the family van for cross-country road trips.
More About Tess
Tess’s nontraditional journey into professional writing began in 2012, with the opportunity to draft an industrial oven manual for freelance writer Kirk Livingston (Livingston Communication, Inc). At that time, Tess didn’t know that what felt like a one-off assignment would later become her everyday work.
After a year of volunteering with AmeriCorps, Tess spent three years in nonprofit case management and administration roles. During this time, she found herself drawn repeatedly to writing projects. She also learned to navigate the work environment in a regulated setting as a medical records administrative assistant at a mental health and therapy clinic.
Once Tess and her husband, Nick, started their family, Tess rebooted her technical writing career as a subcontractor for Livingston Communication, Inc. She also began taking on medical writing projects through Livingston Communication, Inc.—first marketing materials for United Healthcare, then publications for Medtronic and Edwards Lifesciences.
From there, she’s been able to take on a variety of medical writing clients and projects as both a subcontractor and a sole proprietor, growing through each experience. In addition to the clients mentioned above, Tess has worked with Intuitive Foundation, Castor, Veradigm, Cencora, Optum, ABM Respiratory Care, Luminary Therapeutics, Ford Hutman Media, and Yamamoto/Colle McVoy.
Tess continues to see ties between her early experiences in nonprofit work and what she does today, especially in the importance of clear, accurate, and ethical communication.
